Grotto. Double projection video installation. Dimensions approximately 20 feet by 12 feet. Emma Bolland (2005)
In Unearthing #3 I referred to the days of my mother’s dying, and my experience of witnessing these days via the mediation of the physicality and iconography of our domestic environment and surrounding landscapes.
A few days before her passing I escaped from the house, hoisted a camera onto my shoulder and ran to and around some nearby woods known as The Grotto, a place of childhood refuge. This footage eventually became part of my 2005 installation of the same name. The writing of Unearthing #3 impelled me to retrieve the raw footage, and to begin to experiment with the possibilities of creating a discrete short film. The first rough edit, working title ‘Spelunker, Deep Sea Diver, Astronaut’ (a paraphrase of Deleuze on Proust) can be found below.
Really interesting soundtrack – and great title.
Thank you. The sound was all recorded through the camera mike at the time. It was a good camera though, do tape & state of the art for 2005. As the footage has been stretched and compressed the sound has walked along with it. Serendipity.
Excellent serendipity. I had initially throught that it had been carefully constructed/composed.
